Born in Havana in 1973, Carlos trained at the National Ballet School of Havana in Cuba. After winning the Prix de Lausanne in 1990 and graduating into the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, he first came to London in 1991 to join English National Ballet. Subsequently, he danced with Boston Ballet and, while Principal Guest Artist with The Royal Ballet (RB), he also appeared with illustrious companies all over the world. Having performed almost every classical role from Spartacus to Romeo to great acclaim and having garnered multiple prestigious awards, Carlos retired from ballet in 2016.
In addition to choreographing the RB production of Don Quixote and Carmen, Carlos has created several award-winning shows of his own and has also written two books, including a work of fiction Pig’s Foot, and his autobiography No Way Home. Yuli, a film inspired by his life, went on general release in April 2019. Carlos founded his own touring company Acosta Danza in 2016 and, a year later, opened his first Dance Academy through the Carlos Acosta International Dance Foundation which provides a three-year training programme for young dancers.
