Nina Ananiashvili studied at the Tbilisi Choreographic School, in Tamara Vikhodtseva’s class before pursuing her education at the Moscow Choreographic School, under the tutorship of Natalia Zolotova.
From 1981-2004, she was prima ballerina at the Bolshoi and, under the guidance of Raisa Struchkova, she prepared for and performed all the major roles from the classical ballet repertoire.
While retaining her status as prima ballerina of the Bolshoi she was the first dancer from the former Soviet Union who was invited to New York City Ballet where she danced leading roles in Symphony in C, Raymonda Variations and Apollo. She also performed with the Royal Danish Ballet, Kirov Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, the National Ballets of Norway, Finland and Portugal, Boston Ballet, Munich Ballet, Houston Ballet and Tokyo Ballet, and La Scala.
She won first prizes at Varna International Competition (1980), Moscow International Ballet Competition (1981) and IBC Jackson, Mississippi (1986, USA).
In 2004 Nina became Artistic Director of the State Ballet of Georgia. Under her direction, the company’s repertoire includes new choreographic editions of classical ballets, as well as productions by choreographers including George Balanchine, August Bournonville, Mikhail Fokin, Sir Frederick Ashton, Jiri Kylián, Alexei Ratmansky, Alexei Fadeyechev, and Yuri Possokhov.
