Invitation to a private rehearsal with the Alexander Whitley Dance Company
Thursday 8 December at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, 5pm
Acclaimed choreographer Alexander Whitley is delighted to invite members into the studio to observe a private rehearsal with his company dancers. Alexander will be developing choreography for a new multifaceted programme based on Stravinsky and Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring ballet.
“The Rite of Spring has come to be seen as a rite of passage for choreographers. Everyone who dares take on the ferocious energy and dizzying complexity of the music is also challenged to bring their own unique interpretation to its powerful themes, which reach back into our deep history at the same time as warning us of things to come. From early on in my choreographic career I began wondering how I might take on this mightiest of challenges.” Alexander Whitley
Alexander trained at the Royal Ballet School and began his career at Birmingham Royal Ballet before moving into contemporary dance, where he enjoyed a wide range of experiences working with companies including Rambert, Michael Clark Company, Sydney Dance Company and Wayne McGregor Random Dance. During this time he was twice nominated for Outstanding Performance in the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards. His choreography has won him nominations for the 2012 Arts Foundation fellowship, the 2014 Sky Arts Southbank Awards and the 2015 Critics' Circle Awards.
Building on his distinguished performing career, he founded his company in 2014 in response to the new creative possibilities emerging from developments in digital technology and the interdisciplinary practices forming around it. A platform for enquiry and innovation, he brings together world-class artists, academic research and technological ingenuity in the creation of ground-breaking dance productions.
The company thanks the London Ballet Circle for its support during the Big Give Christmas Challenge in 2020, and hopes to see some of the members at the rehearsal in December.
